OpenAI’s computer-and-apps guide says a dot remains available in the cloud when the user’s computer is off. But work using that personal computer requires it to stay online with the ChatGPT app open. A task can be coordinated from the cloud while still relying on local files and tools. The place where a request is sent therefore does not establish where its execution happens.

The guide also distinguishes an offline computer from revoked access: disconnection does not itself remove the saved connection. Separately, a configured Codex cloud environment can support coding work with the repository and configuration it needs. These are existing documented options, not a newly announced automatic failover system. The page supplies no publication or revision date, and this analysis does not claim hands-on reliability testing.

Editorial take: Before leaving an unattended job, ask which machine, files and app connections it needs. If the work depends on a laptop, either keep that setup available or deliberately prepare a suitable cloud workflow. After an interruption, check what actually completed before restarting. An assistant remaining reachable is useful, but it is not evidence that every dependent task can continue.
